Deception Pass is one of the most visited state parks in Washington, and it’s days like this that you can easily see why. The park boasts aqua waters that are home to local wildlife, beautiful beaches that make for perfect picnic spots, and dozens of hiking trails that’ll lead you to the best views of the Deception Pass Bridge, Whidbey Island and the Puget Sound. It’s a truly perfect spot to say “I do” with the one you love.

Note: Like many state parks in Washington, you’ll need a Discover Pass to park (either $30 for an annual pass, or just a $10 fee for the day). You may also need a Special Activities permit depending on your party size, if you have professional photography or other vendors, or if you are bringing guests. It’s always best to check with the park just to be safe. Or you could leave all of that legal shit to me to figure out for you!

Get Ready & First Looks

The north end of the park has a campsite that’s closed in the winter season. Around this site there’s also open stone shelters that could make for the perfect spot to get ready for your big day. In the off-season it’s as simple as walking up and claiming it, but in the summer you may want to reserve one for the day.

Share Vows on the Beach

There are tons of beach spots in this park, but just a few steps away from those stone shelters lies Bowman Bay, one of the most accessible beaches in the park. If you’re inviting loved ones for this part of the day, this may be a great option. Even if it’s just you two, it’s still a lovely spot to say “I do” and make your commitment official.

Picnic at Lighthouse Lookout

A short 20-minute walk from Bowman Bay beach, Lighthouse Lookout has one of the best views of the Deception Pass Bridge in the whole park. Along the way keep an eye out for local wildlife, including harbor seals, bald eagles and even owls depending on the time and season. This is truly the perfect spot to relax with a private picnic together.

Extend Your Adventure

If you want to spend more time in the park you could wander through the trails in the woods, hire a local boat to take you out on a sail, or watch the sunset by a campfire.

This elopement itinerary would be the perfect precursor to a honeymoon on the San Juan Islands. Take a private airplane with Kenmore Air, or take the ferry from Anacortes (just a 30-minute drive from the park). Spend your time whale watching, wine tasting, hiking, biking, exploring the coastal towns or cuddling in at a unique AirBnb.

It's not too late to elope in 2024!

I still have openings for October through December, and as you get into those months, it’s really important to have an expert to guide you through the changing conditions to make sure your day is still as magical as you’ve been picturing.
